"Fearless Bush War Hero" Turned Critic: Sejusa Fires Back at Social Media Comment

Kampala – Retired General David Sejusa, once celebrated as a "Fearless Bush War Hero," has stirred political discourse with a sharp response to a social media comment accusing him of losing his boldness after receiving a substantial retirement package.

The comment read: “Fearless Bush War Hero! But after that 10Bn retirement package, now lying on a fixed account, you all of a sudden cowed! You and your ilk, your time is up. We need our country back.”

Unfazed, Sejusa responded with biting sarcasm: “Why don’t you ‘have it back,’ then? Who is stopping you? That’s the problem of your type, actually! You say we are cowed and useless, and you ‘want your country back.’ Why don’t you take your country back? You keep talking and threatening: Nzija; Tujja; coming coming! The Brave, indeed.”

The Exchange That Sparked Debate

The interaction, which unfolded on social media, has ignited a heated conversation about leadership, activism, and accountability in Uganda. The original comment accused Sejusa of abandoning his revolutionary zeal after receiving a hefty retirement package, insinuating that he, along with other leaders from the Bush War era, had failed to deliver on the promises of their struggle.

Sejusa’s reply was seen as a challenge to his critics, questioning their ability to take meaningful action instead of relying on rhetoric.

A History of Outspokenness

General Sejusa, a veteran of Uganda's Bush War and a former spy chief, has long been a controversial figure. He has openly criticized the government he once served, making him a polarizing figure in Ugandan politics. However, his critics often accuse him of hypocrisy, claiming he benefited from the very system he now criticizes.

Sejusa’s fiery response has sparked a broader conversation about leadership, accountability, and the future of Uganda. While his words challenge critics to act, they also underscore the lingering tensions between Uganda’s past and present.

As the debate rages on, one thing remains certain: Uganda’s political landscape is as contentious as ever, and figures like Sejusa continue to play a significant role in shaping the narrative.

Beyond Regime Change: Why Africa Needs a Mindset Revolution

OPINION: Africa Must Move Beyond Regime Change Politics By Ouma Patrick, Aspiring Member of Parliament – Samia Bugwe Central Crown Media East Africa For decades, African politics has been trapped in a single, loud narrative: regime change. Citizens are told that their problems — poverty, unemployment, corruption, weak services — will magically disappear once a new group of leaders replaces the old. But Africa’s experience shows a harsher truth: regime change alone does not deliver transformation. Across the continent, opposition leaders gain popularity by condemning the failures of sitting governments. Yet once some of them enter the same systems they criticized — appointed to high offices, given access to state resources, or absorbed into government structures — they often become part of the elite they once fought. Their lives change; the lives of ordinary citizens do not. This political cycle has produced a troubling dependency mindset. Citizens have been conditioned to wait fo...
