President Museveni Criticizes Voters for Electing Leaders Who Fail to Monitor Government Programs

In a pointed message aimed at Ugandan voters, President Yoweri Museveni criticized citizens who repeatedly elect leaders who fail to adequately monitor and support government initiatives aimed at public service and development. In his remarks, Museveni underscored the importance of electing responsible leaders, especially in rural constituencies, to ensure effective oversight of government programs designed to uplift communities.

The President’s criticism comes amid widespread public debate over the performance of local leaders, especially regarding their role in implementing government programs such as the Parish Development Model (PDM) and other community development initiatives. According to Museveni, elected leaders play a crucial role in the success of these programs, and the choice of effective, committed representatives is key to ensuring that government resources reach the intended beneficiaries.

“This blame does not fall solely on leaders,” Museveni stated. “It is up to the voters to elect people who are capable of monitoring and pushing for real results, not just populists. Voters have a role in choosing responsible leaders.”

The President’s comments have prompted reactions from both voters and political analysts. While some view his remarks as a call to action, others see it as a reminder of the shared responsibility between the government and its citizens. Community members in districts like Busia, where oversight issues have been raised in previous years, are now reflecting on these remarks as they prepare for the next election cycle.

Local observers argue that Museveni’s statement reflects the frustration of many citizens who feel that some of their elected leaders have not effectively fulfilled their duties. They stress that informed voting decisions are essential to creating positive changes at the grassroots level and to avoiding the mismanagement of funds and resources earmarked for community development.

President Museveni's message serves as a reminder of the impact voters can make by electing accountable and visionary leaders, especially as Uganda moves closer to its 2026 elections.

Beyond Regime Change: Why Africa Needs a Mindset Revolution

OPINION: Africa Must Move Beyond Regime Change Politics By Ouma Patrick, Aspiring Member of Parliament – Samia Bugwe Central Crown Media East Africa For decades, African politics has been trapped in a single, loud narrative: regime change. Citizens are told that their problems — poverty, unemployment, corruption, weak services — will magically disappear once a new group of leaders replaces the old. But Africa’s experience shows a harsher truth: regime change alone does not deliver transformation. Yet once some of them enter the same systems they criticized — appointed to high offices, given access to state resources, or absorbed into government structures — they often become part of the elite they once fought. Their lives change; the lives of ordinary citizens do not. This political cycle has produced a troubling dependency mindset. Citizens have been conditioned to wait fo...
