Museveni Summons US Ambassador Over Alleged Meddling and Opposition Support

President Yoweri Museveni has called for a meeting with the U.S. Ambassador to Uganda, William Popp, in the wake of the country’s Independence Day celebrations (October 9). The meeting is set to address concerns over the conduct of the U.S. Embassy in Kampala.
Insiders reveal that President Museveni is displeased with the embassy’s apparent collaboration with the opposition, providing them with financial and strategic support. Key figures, including Political Officer Shirm Christopher and the CIA station chief in Uganda, have reportedly been involved in these activities.
The U.S. Embassy is also accused of supporting civil society organizations (CSOs) promoting LGBTQ rights and other initiatives perceived as attempts to undermine the Ugandan government. Additionally, the embassy has allegedly imposed sanctions on government and security officials, a move seen by some as a tactic to weaken their authority.
This comes on the heels of recent comments by Chief of Defense Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who demanded that Ambassador Popp apologize for what he called “undiplomatic behavior.” General Muhoozi had set a deadline for the ambassador to personally apologize to President Museveni by Monday morning, threatening further calls for his removal if no action is taken.
