Khartoum, December 19, 2024 — The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a strong condemnation of recent remarks made by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Commander of the Ugandan People’s Defence Forces and son of President Yoweri Museveni. In a press statement released on Wednesday, Sudan described the remarks, posted on the social media platform X, as “reckless and irresponsible.”
Gen. Muhoozi reportedly claimed that Uganda could “capture Khartoum” once U.S. President-elect Donald Trump assumes office. Sudan labeled the statement as a violation of international law and the principles of mutual respect between nations, calling it an unprecedented and deviant utterance.
The Sudanese government demanded an official apology from Uganda and urged the African Union, the United Nations, and the international community to condemn the remarks, which it said posed a threat to regional and international peace.
“This unprecedented and deviant utterance displays an incredible level of disrespect for international law, the ethos of interstate relations, and the principles of mutual respect between sisterly and friendly nations,” read the statement.
Uganda has yet to respond officially to Sudan’s demand. However, the remarks have drawn widespread criticism, with analysts warning of potential diplomatic fallout.
Gen. Muhoozi, known for his outspoken presence on social media, has faced criticism in the past for his unfiltered comments, which often blur the lines between official statements and personal opinions.
Observers are now watching closely to see whether Uganda will issue a formal apology or risk straining relations with Sudan, a key partner in regional security and trade.
